Flying High

Wednesday 15 August 2012

The first flight I took outside economy class felt like heaven. I looked behind me and said to myself “As God is my witness, I’ll never go back there again”. And indeed, I didn’t.

Many flights later, I’ve discovered not every time you turn left in the plane do you receive the same experience. So now I make my booking decisions not only based on route and great deals, but also about the aircraft and service.

You want the best body

I own a Porsche, so I’m used to driving in a fabulous vehicle. I also select to travel in the best aircraft on offer. My choice is the A380 Airbus for both business and first class. Second choice is the 747-400 Wide Body. These planes will give you best value for money in terms of comfort and configuration. If you can elect to fly this way – why wouldn’t you?

Location, location, location.

Where you sit is all-important and I always visit the airlines website at the time of booking to specifically select my seat – they all have seating plans. If you’re travelling first class, chances are you will always have a fabulous seat, but make sure you are not in the last row as you are less likely to get your first choice of meal.

For business class, if you’re travelling on the 747-400, upstairs is best. When I’m on the A380, I like the rows in the middle of the seating plan 12-15. Never, ever accept seats near the toilet or kitchen.

First or business?

These days, business class seats offer excellent value. Most have been upgraded to include very comfortable beds. However if you want the best, there is nothing like first class – even if it’s just for a special occasion. Singapore continues to be the best airline in first class, but Qantas first class to the USA is fabulous too. Etihad’s cabins are definitely the most glamorous, but the service and attention on Singapore and Qantas beats them hands down. Thai Air get an honourable mention.

Airline Lounges

There are many fabulous airline lounges around the world today.  I have some favourites.
Singapore first class lounge  has  to up there with  the best. A wonderful 5 star restaurant with mouth watering cuisine and delicious wines.  The staff offer only the best of service allowing you plenty of time to indulge in the experience.
Of course Thai Air first class at Changi Airport is on a par with Singapore.  Upon arrival your personal concierge checks you in and then assists you all the way into their fabulous lounge and then quickly guides you through customs and prepares you for a pleasurable plane ride.
